Some players might make their choice of online poker room through reputation of a site, or simply what poker room their friend happens to be on, but I do think for most players the first time deposit bonus matters. Last week, I wrote about a very interesting poker experience at Party Poker which saw me go from building a strong chiplead to then seeing several hands go horribly wrong at the final table. I was eliminated in 7th place by one of those hands that will stay with you for some time.

This week, I wanted to better my placing last week and continue to move up the league table, as we have our end of league tournament on May 24th. I started quite well on Wednesday, picking off a couple of small pots, before finding myself dragged into a huge pot when myself and an opponent incredibly, both got dealt the same hand and flopped a Full House. I was trying to mix up my play a lot, raising relatively small preflop and making the exact same bets preflop with (5s,6s) (K,Q) and (K,J). I joked that if I got dealt (A,A) I might make the same preflop bet just to really confuse everyone, and very strangely, got dealt exactly that on the next hand. It’s almost as if the Aces in the deck heard me say it, but I decided to make the same bet as promised, knowing full well no one could possibly believe I had been dealt it straight after saying this. In hindsight I should have bet more and not allowed the small blind to make a loose call with (10,6). The flop came down (6,6,9) and I was forced to make an excellent lay down when I was reraised on the flop.

After this I slid down in chips, but came back strongly to make the final table. I was eventually eliminated on the bubble in 5th place, but I had bettered last weeks result and played well overall I feel. I could have tightened up to try and make it into the money but to me, if you are scared of the bubble place, you never maximise your chances of winning.

One of the most interesting new features to be added to PKR in recent months are the Omaha hi/lo games. These seem to be attracting quite a lot of interest, not just from regular Omaha players, but from Holdem players too. I like to see as many options as possible in terms of games, so it is nice to see PKR paying attention to this aspect of their poker room.

PKR is the room where I play most of my online poker at the moment, as I have grown quite accustomed to the wonderful experience of playing here. Once you design your own moving, gesticulating avatar, playing elsewhere jut doesn’t seem quite the same. This is not the only thing to consider of course, and some might say it is a trivial point compared to other aspects.

I find PKR not only pleasing to the eye, I like their tournament schedules, reload bonuses, and their first time deposit bonus. These bonuses ensure that players keep some extra cash flowing in until they can build a bankroll, and so they are important to most online players.

www.pkr.com - In Holdem, Jacks can somtimes end up losing you a big pot, but that certainly doesn’t mean they are a bad hand to get dealt. I was just reading on a site posts people had made about a hand where (J,J) wins all the money against (3,3) after a flop of (K,3,J). The player with (J,J) had allowed four other players to see the flop by limping in with (J,J) and some felt that this was ’standard play’. Personally, I cannot think of many circumstances where I would limp in with (J,J). You might argue that you can smply fold the hand if an Ace, King, or Queen appears, but then let us suppose in this instance you are hoping for a flop of undercards.

Many players might then get very aggressive on the flop with their Jacks, but what happens if you are called and your opponent turns over two pair with suited connectors or something similar? If you allow four other players to take a flop then end up getting beaten by this type of hand, in my opinion, you didn’t get unlucky, you played the hand horribly. As soon as you decide not to raise preflop, you have no idea if you are in front when an overcard falls, and you have no idea if you are in front if it doesn’t when your subsequent raise is called or reraised. I have heard other players saying that people always bet too much with (J,J) preflop because they do not want to see a flop with them. When I have (J,J) I do not mind Timmediately means I can narrow down the possibilities of what my opponent can be holding. Also, if you raise strongly with (J,J) preflop and are faced with a big reraise, most of the time you can fold them knowing you would probably have been about 50% to win the pot at best. pkr.com

www.pkr.com - In an Omaha tournament, you find yourself dealt (Ah,Qh,Qc,2h).
This type of hand certainly has it’s points of interest, but it also concerns me too, in much the same way as (A,J) suited, in early position, would in a Holdem game. I would feel compelled to play it, and one advantage in a Pot Limit Omaha game, would be that you can see how the flop develops without costing yourself a great deal of chips.

The pair of queens is an obvious plus point in the hand, and having an Ace with them is good too. The problems with the hand, are really that you have three hearts in your hand when you only want to see two. The extra heart immediately takes a little extra off your chance of making a flush, and takes up a suited card that would have been better matching the club you have. That brings me to our next point, the 2 of clubs. It brings an outside chance of making a straight with the ace, and perhaps another pair of twos will fall on the flop, but for the most part, the two weakens our hand.

I wouldn’t raise the pot myself in early position, but partly because most of the Omaha games I am involved in, are of the kind that there will often be a raise preflop on a full table anyway. So if there is a raise I will happily call, but I do not want to risk increasing the pot with my raise and the subsequent calls, only for someone in late position to then have the opportunity for a large reraise. As nice as this hand might seem to some players, any hand containing (K,K,x,x) or (A,A,x,x) has us in a fair bit of trouble.
For this reason, I always like to take a flop and see how things develop before comitting large amounts of chips to a pot. www.pkr.com

www.pkr.com - As you might well imagine, a tournament such as the World Series main event, would require huge amounts of concentration due to it’s length and size of the field involved. I am sure there are many players that fall by the wayside due to lapses in concentration, although they may not admit that as the reason why.

Despite all this, it is not only in lengthy events that concentration lapses can prove your undoing, and I have personally had one such moment in a tournament a few months ago. When short stacked, there was a player on my right who kept trying to pick up my big blind, announcing ‘1,000 more, or 2,000 more’ whenever it had been folded round to us. I had already moved all in on the previous round when he attempted this, and as the last player before this players turn to act folded his cards, I had already made up my mind to do the same again when he tried the same move.

I felt strongly that he was going to announce his usual raise, and so the moment he spoke I announced ‘all in’. The problem was he had announced an all in himself, and I had not been able to catch the words before they left my mouth. It was a real lapse in concentration and I had no overcards to his (J,J) and lost. I have learnt this lesson now and always listen intently to players declarations before making my decisions. It is easy to make smaller mistakes than this though, even in short tournaments.

But if you are paying attention to each hand whether you are involved in it or not, you will keep yourself in a position where you know much about the way your opponents are playing their hands. Moreover, you should hopefully be able to keep your mind from wandering.

www.pkr.com - The short answer to this question would of course be, stronger than your opponents, but we all know poker is not that simple. It’s difficult to place the exact hand your opponent has which is your first problem. Making a call for a sizeable portion of your chips is difficult to do when your hand is quite weak, but the only factor which is relevant, is the relative strength to your opponents hand. You need not feel embarassed about showing an Ace high if you feel it is the best hand.

I had one instance in my live game this evening when the flop came down (A,6,6) and I had (K,3) in the hole. My opponent checked, as did I, and the turn came another ace for a board of (A,6,6,A). My opponent bet out quite heavily and although I felt my hand was the best, I didnt have the conviction to reraise. My opponent showed Queen high after I had folded.

In most circumstances I will not call a bet on the flop or turn, I am more likely to reraise if I feel I am in front. In this way you will gather further information to confirm or dispel your judgement of being in front.
The river is usually he safest time to call a bet when you feel you are in front. In most situations you will feel that you might be in front but still be concerned about possible bigger hands. With a raise on the flop or turn from your opponent, it is more difficult to call because you know you might be raised on the next round of betting.

www.pkr.com - As well as understanding the mathematical aspects of poker, it is important to understand the psychological impacts situations in the game can have, and to react accordingly. As well as realising this in terms of your opponents, you have to deal with your own moments of elation, frustration, and despair in the game too. Personally, I try as much as possible to detach myself from the emotion involved in a hand.

There is always a series of facts about your given situation to draw upon in order to find the best path forward, and you must stoically do so, without giving way to how you feel emotionally. In terms of your opponents, you can show them hands sometimes to demonstrate the way you are playing, and then alter it, or you can bluff someone off a hand, and then not show them, when they clearly hope you will show what you had. The key point is that your opponents should at any given time, be either thinking the wrong thing about the way you play, or being very uncertain about how will play and primarily what you might have.

I feel you should take grat care to do this, preferably making unorthodox plays that do not cost you many chips, then showing them after. people I play poker with know that I might for instance, limp in with (A,A) with two players or less behind me, and they also know I might raise preflop with (7,8) from early position.
All in all, try and keep a tight hold on your own feelings, and be perceptive of the changes in opponents mindsets, and subsequent play.
