Lifestyle and Poker

Recently there have been Pokerstars adverts on television depicting their sponsored pros as keeping in peak physical condition in much the same way as athletes, and I am sure many of them do keep in good shape. But is an increased level of physical fitness important in a game such as poker?

I personally feel there is some truth to the saying that ‘ a healthy body means a healthy mind’ and I think it probably is helpful to a poker player to get some excercise, mainly because they never get any sort of physical workout whilst sitting at the poker tables.

As much then as I feel it is important generally to keep both your body and mind functioning well and in good condition, I certainly wouldn’t say it’s imperitive if you want to succeed at the highest level. Stu Ungar for instance, was not in good physical condition due to his personal, and tragically unsuccesful battle with drugs when he won the main event at the World Series in 1997. This ailing health did not stop him from playing a fantastic tournament and winning though, so you could certainly say that anyone with the ability, can win a poker tournament regardless of their health problems or lack of them.

As a poker player I feel the most important thing is to be able to make well thought out, careful decisions backed by experience in the game. Being in good health is probably helpful in it’s own way, but it is by no means the most important aspect of playing poker at a high level.
